Atomic Layer Engineering and 3D Nanofabrication for Emerging Quantum and Spintronic Devices

The development of emerging quantum and spintronic devices requires precise control of functional materials and their interfaces at the atomic scale, while creating new opportunities to move beyond conventional planar devices toward complex three-dimensional (3D) architectures. We will explore atomic layer engineering, particularly atomic layer deposition (ALD) and atomic layer etching (ALE), to develop ultrathin magnetic and superconducting heterostructures with sub-nanometer thickness control and tailored interfaces. By combining these techniques with advanced 2D and 3D nanofabrication, we aim to realize unconventional device concepts, including 3D magnetic racetracks and superconducting Josephson junctions. Bridging materials science, nanofabrication, condensed-matter physics, and device engineering, you will gain hands-on experience with ALD/ALE, cleanroom nanofabrication, electron-beam lithography, thin-film characterization, and electrical and magnetic measurements.

Your goals

  • Development of ALD and ALE processes for magnetic and superconducting materials.
  • Demonstration of ultrathin heterostructures with atomic-scale thickness and interface control using ALD.
  • Development of advanced nanofabrication processes for 2D and 3D spintronic and quantum devices.
  • Integration of ALD/ALE with 3D nanofabrication to explore novel spintronic and superconducting phenomena.

Your profile

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with

  • An MSc degree in physics, materials science or related fields including a final thesis project.
  • Demonstrated track record of excellence in research and coursework.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Experience with cleanroom processing and nanofabrication such as lithography and dry etching is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Atomic Layer Deposition/Etching, or Chemical Vapor Deposition is advantageous but not required.
  • Experience with thin-film characterization, magnetic/electrical measurements is an advantage.

Why join us?

This fully funded PhD position provides the opportunity to work in a dynamic research environment equipped with state-of-the-art nanofabrication and cryogenic measurement facilities under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Stuart S. P. Parkin in the NISE (Nano-systems from Ions, Spins and Electrons) department at MPI Halle. The project offers significant scope for high-impact research at the forefront of condensed matter physics and nanotechnology.
